WORLD CHINESE-PORTUGUESE TRANSLATION COMPETITION

The Chinese-Portuguese Translation Contest aims to enhance the exchange on Chinese-Portuguese translation techniques between students of higher education institutions in the world, to train Chinese-Portuguese translation professionals, and to further promote the application of the advances in Chinese-Portuguese translation teaching and research in Macao, the Chinese Mainland and the Lusophone countries along the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Eligibility

  • Any students from one of the following higher education institutions who are studying Chinese-Portuguese translation, translation or other relevant degrees are entitled to form teams to compete in the contest:

    • Higher education institutions that have joined the Language Big Data Alliance (LBDA);

    • Higher education institutions in Macao;

    • Higher education institutions in Lusophone countries

    • Higher education institutions that deliver Chinese-Portuguese translation, translation, and other relevant degree programmes in other countries and regions.

  • Each team is composed of two to three students. Each team can have one coach. The students and the coach should be from the same higher education institution.

  • The contestants in each particular team should not join other teams in the contest.

  • The coaches can coach the team of their own institutions only. They can coach more than one team.

Contest Format

  • Each team must translate the Chinese source texts provided by the organiser, which contain at least 10,000 sentences, from either articles or books.

  • The organiser randomly selects Chinese source texts and distributes the texts to competing teams through email at a specified time.

  • Upon receipt of the source texts, competing teams should translate the Chinese texts into Portuguese within 3 months, starting from the following day after the source texts are delivered by email.

  • The team should translate at least 5,000 sentences, but no more than 10,000 sentences.

  • Only the first submission counts. The organiser does not accept any revisions or resubmission once the translation has been submitted.

Registration

  • Each team needs to complete the Registration Form and email the form to email address WCPTC@ipm.edu.mo by 5 p.m. 31 January 2017.

  • Late registration will not be accepted. The organiser will confirm receipt of the form by email.

Submission

Each team should submit their translation according to the method indicated by the organiser. The method of submission will be announced on the website of the contest.

Assessment Criteria

  • Each team should independently complete their entries of translation. The entries produced by co-translation with non-team members, through plagiarism, or through editing by other parties (except the coach) will be disqualified, while the contestant identified with the said behaviours will automatically lose his/her candidature. The team is fully responsible for any dispute on authorship or on author’s interest arising from the said reasons.

  • The assessment criteria of the Chinese-Portuguese Translation Contest are as follows:

    • Accuracy of information delivery (50%): the translated text needs to completely and accurately deliver the information in the source text, with the tone and style consistent with that of the original, using clear logic and precise terminology and numbers;

    • Clarity and smoothness in expression (30%): the translated text needs to use expressions that are idiomatic in the target language, with correct grammar, fluency, and proper wording;

    • Consistency in language style (20%): the translated text needs to be consistent with the original in style, being elegant and graceful.

  • The organiser will form an independent panel of judges to evaluate the translations in accordance with the criteria above.

  • If a team translates less than 10,000 sentences of the Chinese source texts but no less than 5,000 sentences, the judging panel will deduct marks proportionally.

  • Any team that translates less than 5,000 sentences of the Chinese source texts will automatically lose its candidature for being judged and receive the final mark of zero.

Intellectual Property

  • The translated texts submitted by the team must be an original translation piece. A declaration of originality must be submitted with the translated texts.

  • Each team must ensure that their work does not infringe any copyright or any intellectual property rights of third parties anywhere in the world.

  • The intellectual property of the translation entries belongs to the Macao Polytechnic Institute.

  • The Macao Polytechnic Institute owns the exclusive right of the  intellectual property of all the entries.

Prizes

Grand prize (1 team):

The team receives a cash award of MOP100,000, and the   coach receives MOP30,000.

Second prize (1 team):

The team receives a cash award of MOP80,000, and the   coach receives MOP25,000.

Third prize (1 team):

The team receives a cash award of MOP50,000, and the   coach receives MOP20,000.

Special Awards for Teams from Macao Higher Education Institutions*

Grand prize (1 team):

The team receives cash award of MOP50,000, and the   coach receives MOP18,000.

Second prize1 team):

The team receives cash award of MOP25,000, and the   coach receives MOP10,000.

*In order to encourage the participation of Macao Higher Education Institutions, all local teams are automatically eligible to compete for the “Special Awards for Teams from Macao Higher Education Institutions”. The Macao team will receive the award with the relatively higher cash prize, if they have achieved both a General prize and a Special Award.

Certificates and Award Ceremony

  • Certificates will be issued to the teams that have completed and submitted the translation.

  • The Award ceremony will be held in the Macao Polytechnic Institute.

Other Information

  • The organiser reserves the right to disqualify any team that violates or fails to abide by the rules of contest.

  • In the event of any dispute, the decision of judging panel shall be final and appeal will not be entertained.

  • The organiser reserves the right to amend the rules and regulations of the contest.

  • The organiser owns all the rights for the interpretation of the rules of the contest.

  • If there is any discrepancy between the Chinese, Portuguese and English versions of the rules of the contest, the Chinese version shall prevail.
